Studio Talk
About Studio Talk
A digital magazine about music, artificial intelligence, and the culture they're reshaping together.
Our Mission
We take the question seriously.
Studio Talk exists because the conversation about AI and music deserves better than hype and panic. The technology is real, the stakes are high, and the people most affected — musicians, producers, engineers, listeners, lawyers, and the companies building the tools — are rarely in the same room.
We put them in the same room. Not to resolve the debate, but to make it more honest. We report, we analyze, we take positions. We're not neutral on whether the music industry should treat independent artists fairly. We're not neutral on whether transparency matters. But we try to be rigorous about what we actually know versus what we're arguing.
Every issue is organized around a single question — one that doesn't have a clean answer yet. We think that's the right unit of inquiry for a moment this complicated.
Independence
No affiliations. No investors. No agenda except the work.
Studio Talk is independently published. We have no financial relationships with any AI music company, record label, streaming platform, or technology investor. We don't accept sponsored content. We don't take advertising from companies we cover.
We're funded by readers. That's the only arrangement that lets us write what we actually think.
How We're Organized
Five departments. One question per issue.
The Moment
Where we are right now — the cultural and industry context that makes the issue's question urgent. This is the department that sets the scene.
The Builders
The engineers, founders, and companies making the tools — and the choices embedded in them. We go inside the rooms where the decisions are made.
The Sound
The music itself. What it sounds like, how it's made, and what it does to the listener. We listen carefully and report honestly.
The Ledger
The economics and the law. Who profits, who loses, and what the rules say — and what they don't say yet.
The Edges
The harder questions. Identity, ethics, and what happens at the boundaries of the category. The department for things that don't fit anywhere else.
